This is the dramatic moment a Tesla driver crashed into 12 other vehicles while he was allegedly drunk in Thailand.

Footage shows the electric vehicle rear-ending a parked sedan before screeching down the road and smashing into several cars parked next to the center island in Phitsanulok province early morning on January 6.

Local police said they arrived at the scene at 3:30 am following reports of a car crash.

They found six cars and six motorcycles damaged in the crash, but no injuries or casualties.

Officers detained the male Tesla driver, who was found to have a blood alcohol level of 194 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of blood - more than double the legal limit of 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Thatchapong Wongpatthanavis, superintendent of the Mueang Phitsanulok Police Station, said the Tesla driver was a consultant for the local traffic police.

He said: 'The case will proceed impartially and according to law. They will no receive any special treatment just because they work for the police.'

Arthit Sriputhorn, 35, the brother of the owner of a nearby eatery, said: 'I was in the back of the shop when I heard a loud noise, so I rushed outside to see what was happening. About 12 vehicles were parked on the side of the road, some of which were completely demolished. The driver responsible got out of his car uninjured.'

Authorities said the driver was charged with causing damage to others' property. They were awaiting the results of another alcohol test before charging him with drunk driving.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
