Officials transported heavy machinery by ship to provide disaster relief following the deadly 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Japan.

The country's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism coordinated with the Ministry of Defense to transport trucks and cranes to the hard-hit Noto Peninsula on January 14.

The heavy equipment were delivered onboard the transport ship Osumi to the coast of Fukami District in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Authorities said transport by water was necessary as land access was restricted due to the quake's impact.

More than 200 people have died from the powerful earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula and triggered tsunami warnings on New Year's Day.

Japan lies along the western edge of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
