Pedestrian bridge collapses at construction site in Thailand
This is the dramatic moment a concrete footbridge collapsed onto a road during construction in Thailand.
The pedestrian bridge was being installed when its deck came crashing onto the pavement in Chanthaburi province on Friday evening.
CCTV footage shows how the 116-tonne structure fell from a crane, narrowly missing construction workers who managed to run to safety.
Authorities said no one was injured in the collapse.
The Department of Highways said the debris was being cleared from Highway 317, which connects the province to Sa Kaeo. The estimated cost of the damage is at least 10 million Baht (229,066 GBP).
A provincial highway official said: 'The accident was believed to have occurred while two T-beams were being placed on top of the reinforced concrete columns.
'The first beam was successfully installed, but the second fell while being lifted into position. The crane was likely unable to support the weight, causing both beams to fall.'
Crane assistant Rungrot Wangwan, 19, said he had a narrow escape when the footbridge collapsed just a few metres away from him.
He said: 'I was standing on the back of the trailer, clearing equipment and moving vehicles out of the site when I heard a loud crack from the cement. Suddenly, the beams collapsed and crushed the crane less than 10 metres away, throwing me onto the road. Luckily, I only ended up with minor scrapes.'
Officials said the exact cause of the incident was under investigation.
