SOUNDBITE (English): CLAIRE BERGER, Director of QSI International School of Shenzhen
"What a diverse community here at QSI.
Thank you everyone, enjoy the day.
Hi, I'm Claire Berger and I'm the director here at QSI Shenzhen.
I am from the U.S. and I've been working in China for about ten years.
We are specifically a school to educate children of foreigners or with foreign passports.
We have about 1,100 students, aged two to eighteen.
So research tells us that students who actually go on field trips become more empathetic and they also become more tolerant of world views outside their own.
International school is a very special place.
So we strive always to kind of mesh the local culture with the international culture.
We do offer Chinese class.
Here, that means we celebrate Lantern Festival, Chinese New Year, Autumn Festival and then also the host culture in many ways.
I think many of those families pick Shenzhen because it's very international and very welcoming to different people from different places.
We have some families that have stayed with us for more than ten years and they decide to raise their children here.
I have four children and my husband is a teacher here at QSI.
My younger two boys were born here at that time.
We really enjoy Shenzhen, had a community here. There are cultures from all around the world and also all around China. It's very diverse. There are many different types of cultures, you know, expats as well as anybody who comes. So there's very much a melting pot here. So for foreigners, it's really easy to live in Shenzhen. If you are hardworking and you're ambitious and you're flexible, anybody can do well in Shenzhen."
