Footage shows torrents of water rushing down the main spillway of the Oroville dam as California braced for an atmospheric river storm on January 31.

California's Department Of Water Resources (DWR) said: 'DWR began releasing water from Oroville Dam's main spillway today to provide flood protection to downstream communities. Total releases to the Feather River are currently at 12,000 cfs and will be adjusted as required to meet U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters flood protection storage guidelines.'

The operation comes as a strong atmospheric river was set to bring storms in northern California.

Atmospheric rivers are long, narrow bands in the atmosphere that transport moisture out of the tropics toward the Earth's poles.
