Nitric acid spill releases toxic fumes in Cape Town prompting evacuations
A nitric acid spill in South Africa released toxic fumes, prompting evacuations and raising alarm in the community.
Locals reported smoke rising from the Ecowize hygiene-products facility in Montague Gardens in Cape Town on Monday at around 3:30 pm local time.
Footage shows brown-orange haze billowing into the sky as residents watched in disbelief.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Jermaine Carelse confirmed no explosion had occurred.
Carelse said: 'There was no explosion - it was a chemical reaction. Yes, it was nitric acid and phosphorous acid.'
Authorities added that the first responding officer quickly identified the incident as chemical-related and activated emergency protocols.
A 300-metre safety perimeter was established around the site to contain the hazard.
By 7 pm, officials confirmed the situation had stabilised. The vapour had dissipated, the building had been ventilated, and the site had been declared safe.
Ecowize said in a statement: 'Emergency services and the relevant authorities responded immediately and are currently managing the situation.
'The safety of our employees, contractors, and the surrounding community remains our highest priority, and we are fully cooperating with all emergency and regulatory teams.'
Experts warn that exposure to nitric acid fumes can irritate or damage the respiratory system. Spills may also react with metals or other materials, releasing toxic nitrogen oxide gases, highlighting the risks posed by such incidents.
