An Indian loan shark was arrested for allegedly lending money at illegal interest rates.

The suspect, identified by local media as 'Jitendra Kumar Yadav', 59, lent 10,000 baht at an interest rate of '20 baht per 100 baht every 24 days' to a street vendor in Samut Prakan province, Thailand.

The female vendor said Jitendra was initially polite for the first few weeks, but allegedly became aggressive and harassed her when she failed to produce the payment.

Jitendra was detained by police on February 27, while collecting money from the woman at a local market.

Police Colonel Sumet Jenwongpitak, superintendent of Samut Prakan Immigration, said: 'The suspect was charged with lending money with an interest rate above the legal limit and operating an illegal money lending service.

'He was handed over to Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station for further legal action.'
