Darian Dozier, a medical student studying in Texas, filmed her reaction to getting her dream residency in her hometown of Kansas City.

The student was joined by her young niece as he filmed them opening an envelope that revealed where she'll be progressing to the next stage of her career.

Dozier becomes quite emotional in the video as she told Newsflare that she was initially rejected by nine schools.

"I was rejected by nine schools the first time I applied. The second time, I applied to about 25 programs and got three offers. I decided to attend a new university because they were so excited about having students and offered many opportunities for students to be a part of building that legacy," she said.

Dozier added: "The road was bumpy, but the fact that 99 percent of our class matched and it was the first match our school had participated in was great and exceeded expectations! To be a part of that moment felt incredible for me because all the work I put in during medical school finally felt worth it as I opened my envelope to find out I was going to my #1 program in my home city; a program that had rejected me for medical school twice.

"The best part about it was my family was there with me and my niece got to be a part of that day as the one to pull the paper out of the envelope. She was so excited and didn't even really know why, but it was so great to share that day with her.

"She is my first niece/nephew so I hope to serve as a role model for her as she continues to get older. She was born right around the time medical school started, so I've gotten to watch her grow during this journey, and she's just my favourite little person in the world."
