Multiple injuries as electric car malfunction causes collision at auto show
At the 2024 Nanjing International New Energy Automobile Exhibition on March 24th in southern China, witnesses reported a shocking incident where a vehicle from the Jike platform directly collided with cars exhibited at the BYD booth opposite, injuring several people, and there’s a driver inside the Jike car. Beside the vehicle, an employee wearing an ID badge and a young boy lying on the ground were unable to rise. "What were you thinking? You hit my son," a father demanded, knocking on the Jike car window, questioning the occupants about the collision.
On the evening of March 24th, Jike issued a statement regarding the incident, stating that at a car show in Nanjing, a Jike X exhibition vehicle accidentally started during a user experience, resulting in injuries to five spectators and damage to adjacent booth vehicles.
After the incident, the organizers swiftly cleared the area to ensure safety. Jike personnel immediately alerted the authorities and transported the injured to receive medical treatment, actively assisting them. Currently, all five spectators are confirmed to be out of danger, with three discharged after examination, while the other two with minor injuries are undergoing further checks in the hospital.
Meanwhile, Jike is actively negotiating and properly handling subsequent matters with the exhibition organizers and other relevant parties. Jike's Nanjing regional investigation confirmed that due to mismanagement of the exhibition vehicles, the display car was not in the prescribed display mode but rather in the parked comfort mode, with the car key within effective use range. Currently, Jike has urgently initiated a nationwide self-inspection of exhibition vehicles to prevent similar risks.
According to industry insiders, the display mode is a specific mode for vehicles mainly used for showcasing. In this mode, the vehicle's powertrain, air conditioning, etc., are disabled via software, while the large screen interaction and other functions of the vehicle are still accessible. Once the display mode is activated, the vehicle cannot be driven during static display, and high-voltage power output is disabled, ensuring maximum safety during static display and preventing accidental vehicle movement during the exhibition. As new energy vehicles, especially pure electric vehicles, typically start silently and accelerate quickly, enabling display mode during static exhibition is particularly crucial.
