STANDUP (English): SUN XINJING, Xinhua correspondent
The Mount Changbaishan Geopark, along with five other Chinese geoparks, were named as Global Geoparks by the UNESCO on Wednesday.
With six Chinese geoparks newly designated as Global Geoparks, China is now home to 47 Global Geoparks.
The designation of UNESCO Global Geopark was first established in 2015 to recognize geological heritages of international importance.
Currently, the UNESCO Global Geoparks network boasts 213 geoparks in 48 countries.
SOUNDBITE (English): KRISTOF VANDENBERGHE, Chief of Earth Sciences and Geoparks Section, UNESCO Global Geoparks Secretariat
"China is certainly our champion country when it comes to UNESCO Global Geoparks. China picked it up very quickly because they understood not only it's a country with tremendous potential when it comes to geological beauty and landscapes, but understood as well the importance of linking that with local development. So it was quickly integrated in the policy as well. At the national level, there has been a strategic view on the development of geoparks. So it's the country with the most UNESCO Global Geoparks in the world."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Paris.
