A hero pet Shih Tzu alerted a sleeping family when a massive python entered their bedroom.

The three-month-old black and white pooch named Zed sensed the 6ft-long reptile slithering through the room and began barking loudly in Bacolod City, the Philippines on April 7 at 2am.

Zed woke everyone in the house, and the serpent was discovered before it could reach the family, including a baby.

Footage shows the long snake being extracted from the back of a refrigerator using poles. Another video shows Zed being given CPR as it was being strangled by the snake when found.

The dog woke up the family, potentially saving the baby from being attacked, but later died from its injuries caused by the python.

Pet owner Chuckie Jurilla said: 'It happened around 2am. My family and I were sleeping inside the house and we heard Zed barking non-stop. After about a minute his bark sounds became different, like he was hurt.'

Chuckie added they found Zed being strangled by the snake. He said: ‘We rushed to check on him and pulled him from the snake.'

The shocked resident gave the puppy CPR to revive him from the attack while animal rescuers arrived at the home to retrieve the snake. Tragically, the puppy later succumbed to its injuries.

Chuckie said: ‘I am so proud of our dog. No one was hurt from my family because of him.'

The python was evacuated from the home and taken to the wildlife handler's office before being released to the wild later.
