Displaced Palestinian family from Gaza celebrates first Eid Al-Fitr in Cairo, Egypt
This footage was filmed and produced 10 April 2024.
A displaced Palestinian family from the Gaza Strip, now taking refuge in Egypt, has celebrated their first Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Amjad Al Kordy and his son were at the Mostafa Mahmoud mosque in Cairo as millions of Muslims congregated for the early morning Eid prayers on Wednesday. They were in the midst of Eid celebrations, but couldn't really enjoy the moment.
"It's the first time I pray Eid in Egypt. I like it here but inside me I'm not happy to pray here while my family and friends in Gaza are suffering from the Israeli onslaught," said Kordy.
After prayers he returned home to enjoy the traditional Eid cookies with his five children and reminisced about how they used to spend Eid back in Gaza.
"We'd pray Eid in the morning, then have cookies like these ones," said Kordy.
Kordy fled Gaza to Egypt two weeks after the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted in October last year. He said that he later discovered, from a post on social media, that his house in Jabaleya in northern Gaza had been destroyed by Israeli shelling.
"It was hit two days after we left the house. It is a three-storey building. My uncle's family were inside when it was bombed," said Kordy.
Kordy couldn't hold back his tears thinking about the impact of the war on his children.
"They are scared from the noise of the Gaza bombardment so much that whenever there's a loud noise from a passing motorcycle or truck, they scream thinking it's a bomb," he said.
Kordy said his family's only dream is to pray the next Eid in a Palestine state free from Israeli occupation, so they can finally live in peace.
The ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza had killed 33,482 Palestinians and wounded 76,049 others, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said Wednesday.
During the past 24 hours, the Israeli army killed 122 Palestinians, the ministry said in a statement.
Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage.
