Three people were killed at a mine explosion in India on Wednesday

CCTV footage shows the dramatic moment the blast ripped through the RSR Blue Metal Quarry, with the powerful shockwave rippling through the area in Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu on May 1.

Human body parts were found strewn some 200 metres away from the blast site.

Local media identified the three casualties as A. Kandasamy, 49, of T. Pudupatti, Madurai district, R. Gurusamy , 55, of Sivagiri and S. Periyadurai, 27, of Kadayanallur.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a spark in a storeroom where explosives were being stored.

Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police, K. Feroze Khan Abdull, said: 'When the three men were handling the explosives, there was an accidental blast.'

The cause of the explosion is still being investigated.

The mine had a valid license and was reportedly owned by a certain A. Rajkumar of Tenkasi district, and managed by a person named Sethu. However, residents have called for the mine to be permanently closed.
