Botched eye bag surgery leaves woman looking like a giant panda
A Thai woman who had eye bag reduction surgery was left looking like a giant panda from the botched operation.
The divorcee, identified only as 'Miss A', 27, underwent the blepharoplasty procedure at a beauty clinic in Thailand to reduce her puffy eye bags, which she believed were hindering who chances of finding a new man.
However, instead of shrinking, her eyebags began to swell from a nasty infection, making her look like a black-eyed panda as blood collected under her eyes.
Miss A said she felt 'disabled' by her condition as she could no longer see properly from the swelling and now had to use a wheelchair. She added she felt depressed because she had lost confidence in her appearance following the surgery.
With the help of celebrity lawyer Guntouch Pongpaiboonwe, or known by his nickname Gun Jompalang, Miss A filed a case against her doctor at the Pak Kret Police Station in Nonthaburi province.
She claimed the doctor, who was not a cosmetic surgery specialist, drew blood from her eyebags for temporary relief, but refused to take responsibility and blamed the infection on her taking supplements.
While broadcasting a live video talking about her condition, Miss A received a call from the Yanhee Hospital in Bangkok offering to give her free corrective treatment.
Dr Suthon Pisuttinusart, medical director of Yanhee Hospital, a team of 18 surgeons were discussing how to treat Miss A's eyes.
He said: 'The hospital would be happy to take care of the patient and provide full treatment. We are ready, we have an ophthalmologist on board, and the medical equipment needed. Dr. Pinai Jirathitiwong, a plastic surgeon, is assigned to be the main surgeon for this case.'
Dr Pinai said that based on a physical examination, Miss A's eyes were also found to be suffering dryness because of the swelling.
He said: 'The wounds have contracted from some necrotic tissue, and will continue to shrink. Our treatment plan right now is to wait and let the wounds shrink. And when it's time, we will do the surgery. There are various methods of corrective surgery. We will look at the patient again, and explain to her the procedures she will undergo. It will take approximately six months.'
Dr Pinai added that the surgeons will be cutting under Miss A's eyes to reposition her displaced eyeballs before grafting skin to patch onto her wounds.
He said: 'There will be scars on her face, but we will try to make the scars as little as possible and keep them as close to normal as possible.'
An emotional Miss A said: 'I feel thankful to the doctors. I don't know how to express my gratitude to them.
'I'm very happy to receive corrective surgery, even though it won't return my face to how it once was. At least I'll have a face that can blend in public.
'At first, I felt disheartened and sad about what happened, but when Gun and Yanhee Hospital helped me, I felt happy and had hope to live again in society.
'I want to caution those who want to get surgery to inspect and check carefully, or you will regret it like me.'
Meanwhile, her lawyer said he was contacing the Department of Health to have the beauty clinic inspected. He said the damages caused may amount to up to one million THB (21,700 GBP).
Eye bag surgery, also called blepharoplasty of the lower eyelid, is a cosmetic procedure that helps correct lose skin, excess fat, and wrinkles of the lower eye area.
