Huge whale carcass washes up on beach in the Philippines
A huge whale carcass dubbed a 'globster' washed up on a beach in the Philippines.
Footage shows the blubber floating in the shallow part of the water and being pushed by waves to the shore in Siargao Island, the Philippines, on April 25.
It was found by a dog, which led its owner to its location, and neighbours started to gather around it. Coast Guard officers later arrived to handle it and identified it as a whale.
Resident John Rey said his pet Whitey kept barking in that direction until he smelled the stench as they went closer.
He said: 'Whitey led us to it. The smell was very bad. We called the officials because we didn't know what to do with it.
'It was a huge globster whale carcass. It was like something extra terrestrial.'
Once a whale dies at sea, the bloating carcass tends to become more buoyant initially before later deflating and sinking or washing up on nearby shorelines driven by wind and coastal currents. Beachings provide an opportunity for scientists to study deceased whales up close.
