STORYLINE:

Siberian tigers have been frequently spotted around China-Russia border areas in recent years, due to joint protection efforts made by both countries.

As one of the world's most endangered species, Siberian tigers, also known as Amur tigers, mainly live in Russia's Far East and northeast China.

Back in 2010, the two countries signed a cooperation agreement to protect Siberian tigers and Amur leopards.

In 2019, two national parks in China and Russia signed a three-year cooperative action plan to beef up cooperation in the protection of the two species.

And in March this year, a Sino-Russian joint research lab on Siberian tiger conservation was established at a university in China's Heilongjiang Province.

In fact, over the past few years, we have done something very important, which is to open up animal passages every few hundred meters along the original long barbed wire fence on the border between China and Russia. Many wild animals can freely traverse between China and Russia. This passage has played a significant role in the joint protection and facilitation of cross-border wildlife passage between China and Russia. In just the past year, we have found that wild animals have utilized this passage over 30,000 times to travel back and forth between China and Russia.

Only over 10 wild Siberian tigers were believed to be living in China at the end of the 20th century. Now this figure has risen above 60, according to Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park administration.
