South American Sea Lions (Otaria flavescens) have the ugliest males of any eared seal, but their females and pups are beautiful. There are several colonies of South American Sea Lions in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), comprising one or more dominant males, each with several females in his harem. This sea lion colony is at Cape Dolphin in the far north-west of East Falkland. Female Sea Lions give birth to a single large, black pup in the austral (southern) summer. Scavengers such as Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura) and Gulls make the most of the Sea Lion birthing period, waiting expectantly for the chance to feast on the afterbirth. In this video a female Sea Lion has just given birth, with four Turkey Vultures and a Dolphin Gull (Leucophaeus scoresbii) waiting nearby for access to the spoils. The male Sea Lion nearly crushes two of its pups as it climbs up the rock face.
