Male lion gives up kill to a horde of vultures and hyenas

Buy video

This video was recorded in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. It captures the moment when a male lion decides to abandon his kill and the immediate response by a horde of vultures and hyenas. This male lion killed a giraffe four days earlier and gorged himself during that time. At the same time many vultures and hyenas were attracted by the sight and smell of this huge carcass. They never dared going near the carcass while the lion was around. All of the scavengers waited patiently day in and day out while their numbers increased. The time eventually arrived for the lion to get up and abandon the left overs of his meal. Immediately the vultures made their way towards the carcass. One hyena appears but disappear again. The male lion suddenly comes back charging half-heartedly. The vultures scatter but they don’t seem to stressed about it. The lion gives the whole scene one look and then turns around and starts walking away. He stops again, looks back one more time and then disappears. This time the vultures came in large numbers to clean up the mess left by the lion. Soon they were joined by a great number of hyenas. Twenty four hours later everything was gone and only a big open patch in the bush remained. It was amazing and fascinating to see Mother Nature’s cycle of life playing out in front of us.
