This is the bizarre moment police drove a jeep into a hospital to arrest a nurse in India.

Video shows the police van negotiating the spiralling walkway as police made their way to the fourth floor of the AIIMS Rishikesh Hospital in Uttarakhand on May 21.

Officers were then seen moving stretchers out of the way for the vehicle to pass.

Police said they were arresting a nursing officer accused of sexually harassing a female doctor.

Ajay Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police in Dehradun, said: 'On May 19, a case of sexual harassment was reported against a nursing officer. He was also suspended on May 20. The same day, a mob surrounded the ward where he was admitted.

'There was a lot of sloganeering going on after which the police were called. When the police arrived here, the doctors were very angry. That ramp was used for his safe passage so that no incident like mob lynching could happen.

'Since there was a lot of crowd, there was a waiting area from where he was taken out and no one got injured in it. The area from which the vehicle went was not a ward but a waiting area. Considering everything, the decision taken on the spot was right.'

Police said a first incident report has been filed against the nursing officer under sections 354 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code covering 'assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty' and criminal intimidation.
