A construction firm has blamed poor-quality glass after dozens of homes in a high-rise building were left uninhabitable when windows exploded, scattering glass fragments onto the street below.

Homeowners captured footage of fragments falling like raindrops onto the street below, which also showed completely shattered windows following the bizarre incident in Sichuan, China.

In total, more than 50 homes were affected by the suddenly shattering glass in the incident on May 21.

The company that built the high-rise building in the Taihua Jincheng Community in Chengdu's Longquanyi district said they had filed a complaint with the company that delivered the glass, saying that either there were impurities inside or the glass might have been weakened while being moved to the site.

However, many people commented that improperly installed glass will also crack if it is not given room to move and is placed too tightly in the frames.

Glass expands and shrinks depending on the temperature, and high-rise buildings are subject to slight movements that also put pressure on the glass.

The company has pledged to reinstall the damaged windows at no charge to homeowners and will report back once the glass manufacturers have responded to the complaint.
