Baltimore, MD, USA - June 4, 2024

The Unified Command overseeing the restoration of Baltimore's federal channel has achieved a significant milestone by removing the final large segment of the Francis Scott Key Bridge from the bottom of the Patapsco River. The b-roll footage captured on June 3-4, 2024, showcases the meticulous efforts of Unified Command crews as they lift and remove the 420-short-ton segment, known as "Section 4C," from the riverbed.

The intricate operation began with hours of pounding using a concrete breaker on Day 1, followed by precise cuts with blow torches on Day 2. Salvors successfully separated tons of concrete roadway and rebar from Section 4C, which had been blocking approximately 40% of the 700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep Fort McHenry Federal Channel.

In the background of many of the video clips, salvage work continues as barges and clamshell dredge grabs remove additional residual wreckage to be transported to Sparrows Point, Maryland, for processing.

The footage provides a detailed glimpse into the complexities of the operation, including close-ups of the concrete breaker and clamshell dredge grab lifting tons of mud, concrete, and steel onto nearby barges. Diver operations were also conducted for a closer inspection of Section 4C, which revealed mangled roadway and rebar wrapped around the steel framework.

On Day 2, salvors used oxyacetylene torches to progressively cut away "hangers" from the main 4C structure, eventually freeing it entirely from all remaining obstacles. The segment is now awaiting transport to Sparrows Point for further processing.
