An elevator carrying around 11 people suddenly plunged from the first floor to the B2 level while its doors were open in eastern China.

The terrifying CCTV footage was filmed at the Asia-Pacific Enterprise Building in Shanghai on June 5.

The incident unfolded as employees, ready to leave for the day, boarded the elevator. As it reached the first floor and the doors began to open, the elevator abruptly dropped, rendering all buttons unresponsive.

The doors slowly closed after the elevator came to a halt at the B2 level, leaving the occupants in a state of shock.

The trapped individuals quickly alerted the building management and called for emergency assistance. Firefighters rushed to the scene, maintaining communication with those inside to keep them calm. Shortly after, building management arrived and coordinated with the firefighters to execute a rescue operation.

Through a swift and organised effort, all trapped passengers were safely evacuated without any injuries. The city's market regulatory authorities soon arrived to investigate the cause of the accident.

Preliminary assessments suggest that the malfunction might have been due to the ageing elevator's occasional brake failure. Despite passing an annual inspection on May 24, the nearly 30-year-old elevator's deterioration was a likely factor.

The Asia-Pacific Enterprise Building, constructed in 1996, stands 18 stories high with two underground levels and five elevators. The faulty freight elevator has been decommissioned, with safety barriers erected around it.

Regulatory authorities are conducting a thorough investigation and will take necessary actions based on their findings.
