SOUNDBITE (English): NANCY WASWA, County coordinator for children services in Nairobi
"Why we commemorate this day is because of the many kinds of abuse that take place in our children, because children are not able to access their rightful rights as it has been stipulated in the Children Act 2022. So there are many rights of the children. If you look at the Children Act 2022, section 144, it talks about the protection of children from various forms of abuse, abuse, denial of education, abuse from neglective parents, we have abuse from harmful practices, abuse of denial even of accessing health services among so many others. As children's services, we have the mandate to safeguard and ensure that the rights of the children are upheld. We do not work solely but work with other partners and all other state organs and non-state organs to ensure that children access their rights."
In 1991, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African Unity, the predecessor of the African Union, instituted the Day of the African Child in memory of the student uprising in Soweto, South Africa on June 16, 1976.
At that time, students marched in protest against the poor quality of education they received and demanded to be taught in their languages.
