Shoplifting suspect's restraint sparks outrage in Brighton, UK
On the afternoon of June 14, 2024, a bystander witnessed a troubling incident in Brighton's city centre.
Security staff from a local shopping centre restrained a man, suspected of shoplifting, on the ground while waiting for the police to arrive. The man, shouting that he was diabetic, was visibly distressed, raising concerns about the appropriateness of the security staff's actions.
The filmer, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Newsflare: "My friend and I were in the city center when we witnessed a troubling incident. A man, who I believe is a shoplifter, was being held down on the ground by security staff from a shopping center in Brighton.
"I felt deeply disturbed by this scene, as these individuals are not police officers, yet they were restraining him while waiting for the police to arrive. The man was shouting that he is diabetic, which made me think he should not be handled in such a manner.
"This situation seemed humiliating and racially biased, as I doubt a white British person would have been treated with the same level of indignity."
The scene drew the attention of some homeless people and other bystanders, sparking a conversation about the use of force.
