Madrid, Spain - June 23, 2024

Agents from the Environmental Police of Madrid City Council rescued a snake yesterday that was found entangled in the fence of a dog park ("pipican") in the Ciudad Lineal district.

Several citizens alerted the Environmental Police after spotting the serpent in the dog park, prompting a swift response from the authorities. Upon arrival, they discovered the snake, identified as a viperine snake (Natrix maura), a non-venomous species common in the Iberian Peninsula.

The snake appeared to be in good health and uninjured. Carefully, the agents captured it and transported it to a wildlife rehabilitation center for further observation.

Viperine snakes play a crucial role in ecological balance and biodiversity by helping to control rodent and insect populations. It's important to note that these snakes pose no threat to humans, and efforts should be made to avoid harming or disturbing them.

Encountering a snake in urban areas should prompt residents to contact local environmental authorities promptly. They can safely capture and relocate the snake to ensure its well-being and the safety of the community.
