STORYLINE
Category 3 Hurricane Beryl has weakened slightly and now has winds of about 190 km/h, according to the National Hurricane Centre's 5:00 a.m. Miami time update.
Weather conditions are deteriorating in the Cayman Islands with high winds, dangerous storm surges and damaging waves expected this morning. Tropical storm conditions are ongoing and hurricane conditions are expected soon.
The Cayman Islands can also expect a storm surge that could raise water levels up to 0.6 to 1.2 metres above normal tide levels and produce rainfall totals of 10 to 15 cm, causing flooding.
Jamaica suspended its hurricane warning as Beryl moved away from the island.
Beryl will reach the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday as a hurricane and emerge in the southern Gulf of Mexico early Saturday as a tropical storm. The storm is likely to regain some intensity in the warm waters of the Gulf as it approaches another landfall off the coast of Mexico or Texas early next week.
Tropical storm conditions will reach the Yucatan Peninsula later today, which could develop into hurricane conditions by early Friday. Beryl is forecast to produce a storm surge of 1.2 to 1.8 metres and rainfall totals of 10 to 15 cm, with up to 25 cm at localised points.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, and the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel.
