Tiny dog squares up to charging black bear while in own back garden
A tiny pet dog bravely squared up to a charging black bear in his back garden.
When Robby Hendry let his 13-year-old pooch Cooper out for a pre-bedtime wee on June 7 he was greeted by an unexpected visitor.
Dramatic footage shows a black bear chasing the Lhasa Apso/Bichon Frise mix down a slope in their Asheville, North Carolina, USA, home.
Cooper suddenly turned and squared up to the bear who turned tail and ran back up the small hill away from Robby’s house.
Robby said: “I was impressed with the boldness and nerve this geriatric 18-pound dog had in going after a several-hundred-pound adult black bear.
“In this situation, I had just let Cooper out in the front yard, off-leash, for his nightly pre-bedtime pee.
“As soon as he got outside he began barking and took off running. I suspected initially that he was chasing a rabbit, so I followed him at a distance until I saw a large black shape in the dark.
“Cooper initially spooked the bear which retreated a few steps before chasing him back, then retreating up the small slope in our yard.
“He has tried to take off running after bears in the past but has always either been confined by a leash or in our fenced-in yard.
“If we see a bear on our evening walk we typically reverse direction and head the other way just to be safe.
“Cooper sees these bears frequently from our screened-in porch and barks his head off whenever he sees them.
“He definitely has the watchdog genes of the Lhasa breed, and is quick to bark at anyone on our property.”
