Chinese woman, 82, balances on stone roller to expertly craft traditional mats
An 82-year-old woman has captured the internet’s attention with her remarkable skill in an ancient craft.
Impressive video filmed in Bozhou City in Anhui Province on June 28, shows the pensioner standing effortlessly on a large stone roller, expertly crushing reeds - a crucial step in her traditional mat-making process.
Locals say the elderly woman has been practising this craft since childhood, having learned it from her family.
Mat-making is a meticulous and labor-intensive job, involving selecting materials, cutting reeds, softening them, and finally weaving them together.
Despite the availability of machine-made mats, the elderly woman prefers her handmade versions. "Machine-made mats are quick to produce, but they lack the personal touch," she says. "Every thread and stitch in my mats are my hard work, and they are cooler and more comfortable to use."
Her grandson, Mr. Luo, reveals that she has seven grandchildren and continues to make mats traditionally to help support the family. Not only has she achieved self-sufficiency, but her work also provides additional income for the household.
