Wheat Ridge, USA - July 11, 2024

The Wheat Ridge Police Department issued a stern reminder to pet owners about the dangers of leaving animals unattended in hot cars and trailers as summer temperatures soar. Responding to a distress call on July 11th, just before 3:00 p.m., Community Service Officers rushed to the 4700 block of Independence St. after reports of a dog barking inside a parked camper trailer.

Upon arrival, officers found the camper had been stationary on the street since 10:00 a.m., coinciding with a scorching day that saw temperatures peaking around 93 degrees Fahrenheit. Concerns grew when officers discovered an unsecured door and measured internal temperatures ranging from 91 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. To their dismay, a kitten was also found inside.

Prompt action was taken to remove both animals from the camper, and the following day, authorities located the owner and issued a summons for animal cruelty regarding both the dog and the kitten.
