STORYLINE:
"Memory, Myth and Metaphor: China-Australia," an exhibition consisting of 40 works by 10 artist members of the Australian Watercolour Institute, is being held at China Cultural Centre in Sydney.
In an interview with Xinhua on Thursday, David Van Nunen, president of the Australian Watercolour Institute, said the exhibition shows the mutual influence of Western and Chinese paintings on each other.
He also noted that cross-cultural exchanges between China and Australia will promote mutual understanding and appreciation of artistic traditions and cultural development.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): DAVID VAN NUNEN, President of the Australian Watercolour Institute
"It was decided that we would show the influence of Chinese painting on Western art and show the influence in some ways of Western art on Chinese painting. So some artists, myself, I've used some Chinese ink painting rushed techniques in landscape, and also some watercolour. So it was sort of, we wanted to have this interest of the cultural relationship between China and Australia within the works."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): DAVID VAN NUNEN, President of the Australian Watercolour Institute
"Of course, the Chinese landscape is a great influence on you when you're there. And I've been very lucky to be able to go to many museums in China and see the great Chinese master ink painters and traditional ink painters. And they do influence the way that I use ink in my own work, even though I'm a contemporary painter in Sydney, Australia. So, yeah, I think we learn a lot from culturally looking at each other's historical cultures and contemporary works as well."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): DAVID VAN NUNEN, President of the Australian Watercolour Institute
"I think art is very important to incorporation and consultation and cooperation between all countries in the world. But particularly with China, I think that these exchanges will continue into the future. And I see them thriving and I see them as an important part of our relationship."
