STORYLINE:

Sudan's Health Ministry is seeking to rebuild the country's health sector, which has been damaged by the ongoing war.

In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Sudanese Minister of Health Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim said that his ministry has worked out an intervention plan to improve health sector performance.

"(We are working) to ensure the commencement of health services and establish administrative and structural arrangements for providing health insurance across Sudan. We have adopted a number of stages for implementing additional services in the near future, thereby improving health services in all states of Sudan and for all citizens."

Health services in Sudan have deteriorated since war broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023.

"Strengthening the health system can only be achieved by improving basic care through health frameworks at various levels."

The deadly conflict has claimed more than 16,650 lives according to the United Nations (UN) Sudan situation report, which the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs last updated on June 24.
