China's revolutionary 'air taxi' achieves historic first Yangtze River crossing
China's locally-produced electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft successfully flew across the Yangtze River.
Video filmed in Nanjing City in Jiangsu Province on August 1, shows the eVTOL, named "Shengshilong," manufactured by Fengfei Aviation in Kunshan, taking off from the Nanjing Drone Base.
The aircraft completed a 25-kilometer round-trip flight over the Yangtze in just 10 minutes.
Fengfei Aviation's Senior Vice President, Xie Jia, highlighted the potential impact of this technology, stating, "We can reduce travel time across the Yangtze by 80%. Future air tours along the river and aerial commuting between its banks will have significant innovative implications."
The "Shengshilong" air taxi, which carried out this groundbreaking flight, can carry up to 2,200 kilograms and accommodate five passengers. Its composite wing structure allows it to take off vertically like a helicopter, eliminating the need for a runway. With a full charge, it can fly over 250 kilometers.
eVTOLs are seen as a key solution for future urban air mobility. The Civil Aviation Administration of China accepted the type certificate application for "Shengshilong" in April, with airworthiness certification expected by 2026, paving the way for public use of air taxis by 2027.
Fengfei Aviation's growth potential has garnered significant attention, recently securing a strategic investment from CATL, a global leader in new energy batteries.
The multi-billion-dollar deal aims to develop advanced eVTOL batteries, supporting longer flight distances and heavier payloads, pushing the industry to new heights.
