Two Canadian tourists injured when boats collide on river in Bangkok

Two Canadian tourists were among five injured when a boat crashed into a ferry on a river in Thailand today.

CCTV footage shows the wooden vessel Wan-Ngarm Nawa 8 ramming into the Chao Phraya Express 194 in Bangkok at 12:13 pm local time.

The collision damaged the roof and five columns of the express boat, while the Wan-Ngarm Nawa's stern was scraped and chipped. There was nobody onboard the smaller boat.

Two Canadian tourists, Niwat Lertnamvongwan, 48, and his son, Vir Lertnamvongwan, 24, were injured, while the three wounded Thais were Somruethai Thongkhomkham, 30, Naruemon Thongkhomkham, 49, and Ratchaneekorn Kladkaew, 51.

All of the injured individuals were taken to the Siriraj Hospital following the crash near the Somdet Phra Pinklao Bridge on the Chao Phraya River

In a statement, the company running the Chao Phraya Express Boat said: ‘In this incident, five passengers were injured from the collision of the boats.

‘The Marine Department, along with rescuers and the company, has transported the injured passengers to the hospital for treatment.

‘Currently, they are all under the care of doctors and in a safe condition, with three passengers having already been discharged.

‘The company has discussed the matter with the Marine Department and the tour boat company.

‘The Marine Department has briefly investigated and recorded the information and will conduct a thorough investigation again to prevent such incidents from occurring again.'
