Gaza Strip: Palestinian athlete vows comeback with stronger vitality after losing home in Gaza conflict
Gaza Strip - Recent
Tamer Qaoud, a young Palestinian track and field athlete, is determined to make a comeback to the world championship stage, despite the challenges he faces after the latest round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict claimed his coach's life and destroyed his training ground in the Gaza Strip.
As a member of the Palestinian national athletics team, Tamer has competed in numerous international sports championships, most recently at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou City of east China's Zhejiang Province, where he participated in the men's 1,500-meter race.
In war-torn Gaza, Tamer lost his home and was displaced with his family members from Gaza City to the southern part of the strip, where they now live in a tent for the displaced.
Tragically, his coach, Ali Bilal Abu Samaan, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, and the only stadium where Tamer trained in Gaza City was destroyed last year, leaving him to train alone in this turbulent area.
Despite these hardships, Tamer has not lost his determination to return to the racecourse and showcase his resilience.

I was at the Asian Games in China, where I ran the 1,500-meter race in 4 minutes and one second. I broke a record in the 1,500-meter race in Algeria. I returned to Gaza just two days before the war began. They dropped leaflets to tell us to leave our city, so we left from northern Gaza to southern Gaza through the checkpoint.";
