UK: Renfrew Bridge Testing Successful Ahead of £1.13 Billion Project Opening
Renfrew, United Kingdom - August 15, 2024
The first opening road bridge across the River Clyde, known as the Renfrew Bridge, has achieved successful testing milestones as it prepares for its inaugural public opening. This critical phase in the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside (CWRR) project saw the bridge undergo operational testing conducted by project contractor GRAHAM. Commissioning activities are ongoing, paving the way for the bridge's official launch later this year.
Designed to directly connect Renfrew with Clydebank and Yoker for the first time, the bridge is poised to unlock a host of economic and social benefits. It promises to enhance access to employment, healthcare, education, and recreational opportunities for communities on both sides of the river. Additionally, the project includes new active travel and road links from Yoker Railway Station to Renfrew town centre and further to the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS).
Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It's fantastic to witness this project achieve significant milestones as it progresses. The CWRR project not only creates thousands of jobs but also offers new housing prospects and infrastructure improvements that will enrich the lives of current and future generations."
Scheduled for completion in late autumn, the Renfrew Bridge's successful testing marks a pivotal step forward in its delivery by Renfrewshire Council, GRAHAM, and HIJV. This transformative infrastructure initiative is part of Renfrewshire Council's broader capital investment program, which includes the revitalization of Paisley's cultural and entertainment venues and the enhancement of regional connectivity under the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
Jim Armour, GRAHAM Project Director, reflected on the achievement, saying, "Closing the bridge for the first time in a smooth and controlled operation is a testament to the dedication of our team over the past few years. We look forward to proceeding with commissioning and ensuring the bridge operates reliably and safely before its official opening."
The Renfrew Bridge project is funded jointly by the UK and Scottish Governments through the £1.13 billion Glasgow City Region City Deal, aimed at fostering inclusive economic growth and sustainable development across the region.
