Argentina: Genetic mutation identified in the dengue mosquito that makes it up to 10 times more resistant to fumigation
Buenos Aires, Argentina - May 23, 2024
Argentina closed the last dengue season 2023-2024 with record numbers in its history: 583,297 confirmed cases and 419 deaths. The sharp increase in infections is a situation that also occurs in the rest of Latin America.
These data provided by the Ministry of Health of the Nation cover from Epidemiological Week (EW) 31 of 2023 to 30 of 2024. Given these worrying figures, the national health entity and epidemiology experts are already analyzing different strategies to combat the vector of the disease, the Aedes aegypti mosquito in the northern and central regions of the country.
Every August 26, the International Day against Dengue is celebrated around the world to raise awareness about the viral infection. One of the latest advances in this regard has to do with a scientific study carried out by specialists from CONICET, the Mundo Sano Foundation and the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), in which they identified a genetic mutation that gives Aedes aegypti insects a high resistance when insecticides from the pyrethroid group are applied to them.
