Storyline: The national parks across the United States remain open amid the government shutdown, but with significantly reduced services. Congress failed this week to pass a budget continuation, resulting in the furloughing of hundreds of thousands of workers and the discontinuation of some services. At Florida's Everglades National Park, the gates are still open and visitors can access trails and outdoor areas. But the visitor center is closed, and services are severely limited. Some visitors expressed little concern, noting that essential personnel such as police and firefighters remain on duty. "They need to do what they need to do. I don't think it'll last very long. A couple of days, maybe. But I don't think too much of it," said Greg Brown, Florida Resident and park visitor. He added that fewer rangers being present was not much of a concern. "I was reading where they're still going to have essential personnel still here, so police and firefighting and things like that, emergency (personnel). I don't feel like that's going to be affected too much," he said. To others, the gaps in staffing and maintenance were readily apparent. "I come here at least three times a week. I used to come a bit more often-but now it's two or three times. And I have noticed there are fewer staff. In fact, today I arrived earlier than usual, and the person who's normally at the entrance wasn't there. So yes, it struck me as very odd," said Nallely Saenz, another visitor. According to the Interior Department's contingency plan, open-air sites, trails, roads, and memorials will stay accessible. Restrooms will remain open and trash will be collected. But more than nine thousand employees, or 64 percent of the National Park Service workforce, have been furloughed due to the shutdown. Rangers deemed 'essential' may stay on but won't receive paychecks until the shutdown ends. Park advocates say with an already depleted workforce, even a short shutdown could leave America's natural treasures vulnerable. The National Parks Conservation Association estimates the system could lose up to one million U.S. dollars per day in visitor fee revenue, while nearby communities could see as much as 80 million U.S. dollars in lost tourism spending each day.
