Sinkhole opens up in road as heavy rain falls in Thailand
This is the moment a sinkhole opened up in a road during a storm in Thailand.
CCTV footage shows a heavy downpour battering the path when the ground at an alley subsided in Chonburi province on September 1.
Rainwater flowed through before the soil moved and caved in. A road barrier plunged into the hole and a nearby electrical pole was also seen tilting down.
Authorities said the sinkhole had a depth of 6.6ft (two metres) and a width of nearly 33 feet (10 metres).
Si Racha district chief Noparat Sriprom said: ‘We installed a barrier to block one of the lanes due to concerns that potential weight might cause the ground to shake and collapse further.'
Local community president Watcharin Charoensap said the hole may have been caused by water erosion on the ground after accumulating over a long period.
Resident Maneerat Sueprasertsithi, 43, said: ‘I received a call and they told me that the ground in front of my house had collapsed.'
She added the awning roof also fell, and the water pipe broke.
She said: ‘I complained to the municipality, but they were waiting for budget allocation.
‘My family is afraid to stay in the house and decided to rent a room.'
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
