Teen rugby player celebrates try with t shirt which reads: "My mum beat cancer"
This is the moment a teenage rugby league player scored a try and celebrated by revealing a t-shirt which read: "My mum beat cancer."
Talented Declan Sullivan, 13, touched down for Haresfinch Under 14s and paid tribute to mum Sammi Sullivan, who recenty got the all-clear after a two-year cancer battle.
Sammi, 34, was diagnosed with stage three breast and lung cancer in March 2022 and underwent intense chemo and radio therapies.
After she was given the all-clear in June, emotional Declan wanted to dedicate a try to Sammi's bravery.
In a special moment caught on camera, he beat five defenders on his way to the try line before racing off in the direction of his mum.
He then lifted his rugby shirt up to reveal the emotional message to the delight and cheers of fans and family on the sideline.
Even opponents Hindley were touched by the moment, writing on social media: "Congratulations to the player, his Mum and all the family from all of us at Hindley!"
Declan, a year nine student at Cowley International College in St Helens, said: "I have watched my mum go through a tough few years and wanted to show her just how truly proud I am of her."
"What better way to do it than to do it doing something I love and something she loves watching me do."
"When i finally got over the line I had butterflies, ran straight to the side lines with my jersey pulled up to my neck showing everyone my top that said 'my mum beat cancer'."
"It was emotional and I held back the tears as best i could because we still had a few minutes to go before full-time."
"But it felt good to show her how proud I am of her which is only what she deserves."
"And thanks to her and her always recording my games, the video went viral and now people from allover can see how proud i am over her."
Single mum Sammi said she had no idea he planned the try celebration and broke down in tears when he revealed his t shirt.
She said: "I record Dec all the time so already had my phone out and was able to capture him on video parading down the field with his team mates in tow jumping all over him to celebrate. "
"You could see he was holding back the tears because they had a few minutes left of the game."
"Once they shook hands with the opposition he was straight over to me like he does every game."
"But this time he broke down sobbing and whispered in my ear: 'I love you mum and I am so proud of you.'"
"I stood there in the pouring down rain with blurry eyes from the tears beaming with pride."
"I can't even begin to tell you how proud I am of him and his brothers after a painful few years and how well they have coped and carried themselves through all of the upset. "
"It meant the absolute world to see just how much it meant to him and it felt even better knowing he was proud of me as much as i am beyond proud of him."
The heartwarming video has touched the hearts of social media users since it was shared online.
Sammi added: "The reaction to the video came as a surprise as I always have my phone out when it comes to the kids because i never want to miss anything."
"It's wholesome and I am all for it. I want the world to see the blessing of a boy that he is for his big heart and his passion for rugby."
"He is proud of me but i am beyond proud of that boy of mine."
Sammi said the cancer diagnosis took a huge toll on Declan and his brothers Taylor, 11, and Jax, seven.
She said she'd come out of a long-term abusive relationship and the family were just getting to a happier place mentally "where they were smiling and laughing again"."
Sammi said: "But then all of a sudden we were hit with another blow because of my diagnosis."
"I sort of already had an idea I had Cancer before i had it confirmed at the hospital because I'd been in a lot of pain with this lump I had for almost a year."
"At the end of my last appointment before it was confirmed, in walked a Macmillan nurse so alarm bells started ringing."
"I just needed to hear it from the professionals themselves and when I did, the first thing i said to my dad was: 'How do i tell the kids?'"
"My initial worry wasn't ever about myself, I was worried how much this was going to set the kids back when I had just got them to a better place mentally and now i had to turn their worlds upside down again."
Sammi said Declan and Taylor burst into tears when they were given the news, but youngest son Jax was oblivious due to his age.
She is out of the woods for now, but is still undergoing preventative treatment to hopefully stop it from coming back.
She added: "What a relief it is to know that all the horrendous side effects have been worth it and I am still able to be here for my boys."
"I feel okay i still have my good and bad days due to the treatments i am still on, but i have air in my lungs and a future to see out with my kids which is worth having an off day here and there."
