Patient watches comedy movie while having brain surgery
A patient watched a comedy movie while having brain surgery to remove her tumour.
Ananta Lakshmi, 55, went to Government General Hospital when she felt weakness in her right leg and arm in Andhra Pradesh, India.
She underwent tests, and her symptoms became worse, including severe headaches, fainting, and numbness on one side of her body, so medics had her admitted to the hospital on September 11.
She was found to have a 3.3 cm x 2.7 cm mass on the left side of her brain. Neurosurgeons performed a removal procedure less than a week later on September 17.
Footage shows Ananta enjoying the Indian action comedy movie Adhurs during the awake craniotomy procedure. Medics cut open her skull to access her organ, but the sick woman did not feel pain due to anaesthesia.
Dr Lavanyakumari said they played her favourite scenes from the show in order to keep her engaged.
She said: ‘It was the first time the procedure was done at our hospital.'
Dr A Vishnuvardhan and Dr Vijaysekhar, heads of the anaesthesia and neurosurgery departments, were also part of the team that performed surgery on Ananta.
An awake craniotomy is a type of brain surgery performed while the patient is awake but under anaesthesia. It is commonly used to treat brain tumours, epilepsy, or other conditions involving areas of the brain responsible for speech, movement, or sensory functions.
Its goal is to allow surgeons to monitor the patient's neurological functions during the procedure, ensuring they avoid damaging critical areas of the brain.
Adhurs is an Indian action-comedy film revolving around two twin brothers who are separated at birth
