STORYLINE:
The British Museum opened its Silk Roads exhibition to the public on Thursday, showcasing over 300 objects, including items from 29 national and international institutions.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): NICHOLAS CULLINAN, Director of the British Museum
"I think this exhibition is a very good example of what the British Museum does best, which is to work in partnership with other organizations and other cultures all around the world. And I think, ultimately, that's a positive thing in this day and age. To be able to say that, of course, we have different cultures and different viewpoints but, ultimately, there are deep links that join them together."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): LUK YU-PING, Co-curator of the exhibition
"This exhibition certainly highlights China's Tang Dynasty's cosmopolitan past and also its connections with the wider world in multiple directions, and we can see its connections both interregionally and also over very long distances. So for example, we highlight the maritime routes that connected China with West Asia. We have objects from a shipwreck dating to the 9th century with objects found off the coast of Indonesia. Ceramics, gold, and silverware that were intended for ports in West Asia. In the past, we see the importance and centrality of China within these wider networks, both in terms of economic development, in terms of cultural contact, and transmission of technology and ideas. And I think this is being reflected also in the Belt and Road Initiative today, where China again plays its hugely important role within a global economy."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SUE BRUNNING, Co-curator of the exhibition
"We're showing the Silk Road as a sort of overlapping series of networks that connected communities across Asia, Africa, and Europe with a really large geographical scope."
The exhibition will run until Feb. 23, 2025.
