Huge waves crashed into cars waiting to board a ferry during Typhoon Yagi.

Footage shows 30ft swells slamming onto a port where the drivers were queueing in Occidental Mindoro, the Philippines, on September 5.

Some of the motorists backed away, worried that the water could sweep them into the sea while others stayed until the vessel arrived.

Passenger Stephelen Villaluna said: ‘It was terrifying. We left the area after that. Safety was more important for us.'

Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, left hundreds dead when it swept through Southeast Asia's the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, as well as southern China.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
