Villagers clean mud from homes as they brace for more monsoon rain
Villagers today cleaned mud from their homes as they braced for more monsoon storms in Thailand.
Locals scraped the muddy aftermath of recent flash floods caused by Typhoon Yagi in Chiang Rai province. The typhoon killed 10 in Thailand and hundreds more in Myanmar and Vietnam.
Soldiers, disaster officers, and relevant agencies also deployed teams to install sandbags at key points to stem overflow from the swollen Sai River.
Authorities dispatched personnel to clean the Sailom Joy Market and dredge debris from canals.
The Royal Irrigation Department said it will inspect a destroyed bridge in order to restore the route connecting villages.
Mae Sai district chief Narongpon Kidarn said: 'We expect the cleaning process to take around a month. We are trying to work quickly as people from around 500 households were sheltering at relief centres.'
The district is located near the Sai River and a weir in the neighbouring Burmese district of Tachileik, which is notorious for overflowing during the rainy season.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
