A wheelchair user was seen overtaking cars on a rural road in Brazil.

Footage shows police pursuing the 59-year-old man as he rode his non-motorised wheelchair, passing other vehicles in Joinville, northern Santa Catarina, on the afternoon of October 1.

When officers attempted to get him off the road, he claimed he was 'training' and questioned the legality of the traffic stop.

Police reported that the man disagreed with their approach, stating that they were obstructing his path and asking for a legal basis for the stop.

The team warned the man about the traffic risks and informed him about the constitutional duty to ensure road safety.

However, the Brazilian Traffic Code only mentions motor vehicles, so no penalties were imposed for his actions.

Traffic educator Marcia Pontes explained that the man's actions fall into a 'grey area' since the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) does not address non-motorised vehicles like wheelchairs, even though they pose significant risks.

After being stopped and talking to the police, he was released and decided to board a bus and finish the journey with safe transport.
