The Sakurajima Volcano erupted, spewing a towering plume of ash and smoke that soared 1,400 metres above the crater in Japan on Sunday, October 13.

Officials reported that this is the 32nd recorded eruption in the region this year, underscoring the area's heightened volcanic activity.

Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, with a history of frequent eruptions. Originally an island, it became a peninsula after a significant eruption in 1914.
