A car with six relatives inside caught fire on a highway in India.

Footage shows the car engulfed in flames on NH-16 near Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on the evening of October 15.

Authorities said that while on the road, the vehicle's brakes suddenly malfunctioned. When the driver attempted to slow down, a blaze erupted in the engine.

The driver said: 'We are from Bihar and had come to visit Puri and Bhubaneswar. I was accompanied by my wife, mother, and two sisters. As soon as we realized a fire had started, we promptly came out of the car.'

Deputy fire officer Abani Swain said that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

The officer added: 'After getting information, we pressed our fire tenders and extinguished the blaze. However, the car was completely gutted. The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained.'

No one was reported injured following the incident.
