Lusaka, Zambia - October 15, 2024

Agricultural technology transfers from China are helping Zambia boost its food production capacity and battle climate-related challenges, said an expert from the Southern African country, speaking a day prior to the 2024 World Food Day.

Oswin Chibinga, acting director of an Agricultural Demonstration Center in Zambia, said there is a pressing need for advanced farming technology across Africa so that the continent can tap into its vast potential for agriculture output.

Chibinga has played an active role in facilitating technology transfers from China to Zambia, and he encouraged developing countries around the world to examine whether they might similarly benefit.

"Those issues of climate change and drought, they really affect productivity. If we go to the potential, we are supposed to be actually exporters of food, are not importers as we are seeing the case be. So productivity is very low, which is linked to technology.";

"China has been a very good friend to our Agricultural sector in Africa. They've established what we call the Agricultural Demonstration Centers in a number of African countries, including Zambia. And one aspect which we find China to be very helpful is the transfer of technology, which they have and which we don't have. And as I said, many other countries, [should] try and see how Africa could benefit from this kind of cooperation with China.";
