Recently, a man in his 20s braved the sea waves and successfully rescued a swimmer who was in critical danger offshore in Huidong County, south China's Guangdong Province.
Yang Shouyuan, who runs a drink stand by the beach, rushed to help as soon as he realized someone was at risk.
Defying waves of more than one meter in height, Yang finally brought the distressed man ashore after a tense rescue operation that lasted about five minutes.
Growing up by the sea, Yang is very good at swimming.
More importantly, he has been immersed in the family education of promoting the spirit of bravery to save others.
Yang's father, uncle, and younger brother have all performed heroic deeds like this one.
SOUNDBITE (Chinese): YANG SHOUYUAN, Rescuer
"The area where he was stranded had a strong rip current. At that moment, I didn't think of other options but to save him. That was my first thought. So, I quickly put on my life jacket and plunged into the sea. As soon as I reached him, I kept bringing him toward the shore. The whole process took about five minutes. If I encounter similar situations in the future, I'll still act with the same bravery and continue to help others. In my family, it's not just me; my father, uncle, and brother all saved many lives here before. I think I've been influenced by this spirit of bravery since I was young."
