Horror truck crash kills one and leaves 29 injured in Indonesia
A teenager was killed and dozens more were injured in a horror truck crash along a highway in Indonesia.
The truck was reportedly travelling at high speed while driving over a downhill section of the Cipularang Toll Road in West Java, Indonesia, on November 11 afternoon.
Dramatic videos show how the out-of-control vehicle ploughed through the road. Authorities said at least 17 cars were involved in the pile-up.
Inspector General Aan Suhanan, head of the Traffic Corps of the National Police, said: 'There was a descent of approximately three miles (five kilometres) leading up to the scene. We found the truck's gear in the fourth position, meaning it was going fast even while travelling downhill.'
He said investigators were looking at human negligence, weather, and overloading as possible causes for the accident.
Kombes Jules Abraham Abast, head of public relations for the West Java police, said a boy named Salsabila, 13, was killed at the scene.
Twenty-nine others, including the truck driver Rouf, 43, were injured and rushed to the Abdul Rodjak Hospital in Purwakarta. Four of them were reported to be seriously wounded.
Police said normal traffic flow along the highway was restored after the damaged cars were towed to the PJR Korlantas Police main post. They added they were investigating the exact cause of the accident.
Following the accident, local congressmen urged politicians to prioritise the Bill on Traffic and Road Transportation in the 2025 Priority National Legislation Program.
Indonesia faces road safety challenges due to high traffic congestion, rapid urbanization, and the prevalent use of motorcycles, which make up a large portion of road fatalities. The country has one of the highest road traffic fatality rates in Southeast Asia.
The government has aimed to improve road safety through stricter regulations, educational campaigns, and infrastructure upgrades.
