Winter Experiment: DIY "Ice-Fried Yogurt" on a Frozen River in China
In the northernmost part of China’s Heilongjiang Province, a fresh snowfall has blanketed the Greater Khingan Range, bringing with it a dramatic drop in temperatures. Huzhong Township, known as the country’s coldest town, hit a bone-chilling -32°C (-25.6°F). Along the serene and partially frozen banks of the Huma River, winter reveals its delicate and captivating charm.
Local resident Lu Wei decided to embrace the icy conditions with a creative culinary experiment during his lunch break. Together with friends, he created a unique winter treat: "ice-fried yogurt."
In the video, Lu Wei explains the process:
Clear the snow from the ice.
Pour water over the surface to prepare the "freezing station."
Add freshly picked, pollution-free mountain hawthorn berries (山丁子) and crush them with a small spatula.
Pour yogurt over the berries and mix thoroughly until it forms a paste.
Wait a couple of minutes for the mixture to freeze into a solid block.
The result? A sweet-and-tangy delicacy with a perfect balance of yogurt’s creaminess and the refreshing zest of wild hawthorn berries. Lu Wei describes the taste as "a magical blend of flavors, uniquely enjoyable in this frosty setting."
Watch this creative take on winter fun, blending natural ingredients and subzero temperatures into a one-of-a-kind dessert!
